Jerome A. Mach - Fine Art - Paintings in Oil and Pastel

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am interested in a variety of subject matter including still life, portraiture, the human figure and landscape. In my work I depict the quiet space, that place that allows a respite from the noise of everyday life.

My studio painting process is enabled by years of observational drawing and alla prima painting; my usual approach is to paint directly on canvas without benefit of underdrawing. My preferred medium is oil paint but I also work in pastels. Paint is applied in a variety of methods including glazes, impasto and drybrushing. I use a variety of surfaces, including treated pastel papers and boards, linen canvas and hardboard panels.

I also employ a variety of approaches to my practice, including a traditional atelier method as well as a loose alla prima manner of painting. This variety in my practice reflects the influence of painters such as William Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Richard Schmid, and several of the Tonalist painters.
